I’ve always been a researcher. It’s one of the parts I love about writing novels! And over the years I landed on some nuggets that have rocked my world, so much so that it led to a massive change for me. Let me introduce to you my first batch of tooth powder!! I love all things vintage, so I’m sure I’m going to love brushing with this powder— taking it back “old school.” My first trial run was good. Different from the paste I’m used to, but my teeth felt very clean! Over the years, I did a lot of research on fluoride— and because of that I switched to non-fluoride toothpaste. Then my favorite brand got bought by a conglomerate, and well it got so hard to find non-fluoridated toothpaste, I gave up.
Recently while studying/researching something else, I stumbled upon the fact that most toothpaste contains Titanium dioxide. This nano particle makes the toothpaste white and bright. According to my research, this can lead to health issues. Check it out for yourself! Titanium dioxide is also in a lot of food like: Mayo, candies, icing, marshmallows and salad dressings to name a few items. I was blown away by this finding. I realize that even in nature there are nano particles, but Titanium dioxide is not naturally occurring and may have a cumulative effect in our bodies.
So – I am making the switch—and dumping store bought toothpaste forever:) here is the recipe if you’d like to make your own:
4 tbsp bentonite clay 4 tbsp baking soda 4 teaspoons xylitol* 8-9 drops peppermint essential oil
*xylitol is a sweetener made from birch and is excellent for dental health. Use only wood and glass bowls and utensils when making this recipe (metal will lessen the effectiveness of the clay)
